Deep Fried Me?

29 Jun

Double covered smothered capped extra sauced anything.
Pizza with double toppings, extra cheese, extra sauce anyone?
Can I upsize that for you for just fifty cents more? Large fry, extra large fry, biggie drink, the gulper?
Cheese fries with double cheese, extra chili and throw those peppers on there too why doncha!

Anything labeled, “Double smothered and covered” can’t be good for you.
But boy oh boy dies it make us wanna eat it!

Fried foods. They taste so good. Fried chicken, fried okra, deep fried mac and cheese wedges, deep fried pickles (I’ve had these. They are tasty, strange, but tasty), deep fried cookie dough, deep fried eggs called Scotch Eggs, deep fried cheesecake or how about a deep fried cheeseburger? Then there’s always deep fried candy bars or deep fried Twinkies, there’s even deep fried Coca Cola. Basically you can roll anything you can think of in a batter and deep fry it and we the people will eat it. Healthy choices, right?

Then we have your eternally tasty chocolate covered bacon, dipped or rolled in toppings of your choice such as
sea salt, pistchios or almonds, or how about bacon bits? Yum, er, huh?

Do you ever see anybody order double lettuce and tomato?
(Well, double tomato, yes. My friend Steph. She is the tomato queen :) ).

Can you give me extra salad with that? Or have you ever been asked, “Would you like extra lettuce with that?” Hmmmmm, no you say? But they will ask if you want extra cheese or double meat? Hmmmmmm…..

Could we get a side of berries with that? Yes we do occasionally ask for a side of fruit to go with our double extra large smothered topped food. Is that so we feel like at least we made one healthy choice for ourselves, so we feel a little less guilty about all the others? Could it be that fruit is sweet, and maybe the sweetness appeals to our sweet tooth some as well? After we consume said fruit we always feel healthier. :) “Whadya mean my cholesterol is high? I have fruit for breakfast everyday!” …. failing to mention the double smothered biscuit with sausage or bacon they consume four times a week…. :) . Selective disclosure maybe?

You’ve probably all heard of Super Size Me. It is a documentary made in 2004 by a guy who only ate McDonalds for a month. His MickeyD diet didn’t do him any favors. It’s actually pretty disgusting to watch, but was also a very graphic point that a lot of fast food is really bad for you. If you haven’t seen it, I think it would be a great education for you. It was for me.

There are healthier diets out there. We all have to choose those diets ourselves over the tasty and convenient trash that is marketed to us. I have used different diets and achieved some good results. Unfortunately I still eat too much. Period. So I’ve gained the weight back that I kept off for so long. Le sigh, I guess I need to stay away from those fried pickles huh? I hope we all choose a healthier route for ourselves. Have fun with dinner ok? Let’s see, MickeyD’s or Chic-Fil-a? Can I get fries with that?

Grateful Mondays…6/27/2011

27 Jun

Before we begin my grateful list, I want to announce the winner to my Blog Bash giveaway. The lucky winner is: Anja M. Anja, you have 72 hours to contact me, or another winner will be announced. A big thanks goes to all who entered and to Family Approve for sponsoring this linked up giveaway. :) Now, on to the gratitude list!

1. Glasses! For those of us with vision impairment, they really come in handy. I like being able to see! I have terrible vision with out them and having them makes life much more enjoyable and easier to handle. Having them also helped me enjoy our vacation more.

2. I am very grateful for the vacation we had a few weeks ago. We both really needed it, and I have had to remember one of my favorite quotes from Dr. Seuss again: “Don’t be sad it’s over, be glad it happened!” I am glad and grateful it happened.

3. Things I am grateful for related to my vacation: The sound of the surf, the water lapping up to the shore and pulling away. I love that sound.

4. Another Beach memory: Seeing the lighthouse in the distance. Knowing that the ocean has tried to wash it away, but some are trying to save it now. I love to see it standing there, watching out over my beloved ocean.

5. The warmth of the sun combined with the breeze of the ocean. Last year we didn’t feel the heat and ended up cooking ourselves in the breeze and the sun. This year I became the sunblock nazi to keep us covered and protected. :) You can get a tan with 30 sun block. I know, because we did.

6. I’m grateful for Boyfriend finally being able to rest and relax. We were driving his car on our vacation. It broke down on the way out of town. Within an hour we had his car headed to the repair shop and were in a nice rental. He was thankful that I could make all that happen so quickly, but he was unsettled by it. A day and a half later, he was finally able to relax. Vacation went much better after that. :)

7. I am happy and grateful for the wonderful food we found at a few of the eateries at Folly Beach. The pic I am sharing is of Tuna Nachos at Rita’s. Yum! That is the best word ever for their food! It’s a fun place to hang out too. If you’re ever at Folly you have to check it out!

8. Patriots Point! Wow! This is a wonderful historical site to visit. We climbed all over the USS Yorktown, a retired aircraft carrier. There are lots of retired planes as well, and many touching stories retold in all the letters and documents that are on display. There is also a submarine open to do a quick walkthrough, it was TIGHT! Not at all what the movies look like, let me tell you! It is the retired USS Clamagore. There are pictures below of us crammed into it. I love the look of all the old dials and charts. We had a great time playing around with stuff. It was a fantastic part of our trip.

9. I am grateful for the natural beauty in that area too. We saw tons of seagulls, pelicans and quite a few egrets. There were tons of cute little hoppy birds I don’t know the name of, they make me think of the little birds in the movie Nemo that hollered: “MINE! MINE! MINE!” when a fish was on the boardwalk. :) We didn’t see any dolphins on this visit, but there’s always next time!

Seagull Parking

10. Memories of my flower loving Grandma, pronounce Gran-maw. She was part Cherokee and loved to be outdoors. I know I get my love of anything blooming from her. I may be almost 50, but I miss my grandparents regularly. I hope those of you who still have them with you are able to enjoy time with them. When I was tiny and just learning to walk, I went on my first beach vacation with my family. Somewhere there is a picture of Grandma chasing me down to the water, :) . I immediately loved the ocean, and my family had a hard time keeping me out of it…..my dad still talks about it. If I ever find that picture, I’ll be sure to share it with you.

Vacations and memories of them and family are good things to be thankful for. Hope your week is starting off well, let me know what you’re grateful for today. Thanks! Angela

My First Giveaway!

22 Jun

Note from 6/27/2011: I want to announce the winner to my Blog Bash giveaway. The lucky winner is: Anja M. Anja, you have 72 hours to contact me, or another winner will be announced. A big thanks goes to all who entered and to Family Approve for sponsoring this linked up giveaway.

Hi there! I am the Angela of Accidentally Angela, and I am participating in BlogBash 2011! There are over 100 contestants, and we will all be having a giveaway valued at least $100. That means you can hop around on all our sites and enter all our giveaways for lots of great, free stuff!.

You can find the list of contestants at the bottom of this post and by clicking the button below:

My prize package is quite eclectic. I can’t wait to show it to you! For starters we have:

Cherry Pit Pack!

a wonderful Cherry Pit Pack valued at $27.00 from the best massage therapist in the world, Donna Beseda. To schedule a heavenly hour with her (or two),
email her at:
massagegal2 at yahoo dot com
(written this way to keep her address from being robot harvested.). Donna is wonderful at what she does. I have been blessed to see her for a few years now. She has helped relieve many of my migraine issues.
Cherry pit packs are wonderful portable heating and cooling packs. They work great on sore muscles, aches and pains providing relief and comfort. They are therapeutic heating pads, non electric, that release moist heat, just microwave for 2 minutes to heat up. Can also be frozen in the freezer and used as an ice pack. I love using them, the moist heat is so yummy! I’m sure you will enjoy it too. Now what else do we have in this special giveaway?

Walter!

The second gift in the pack is a fun one! It’s a Talking Walter doll from the Jeff Dunham collection, valued at $40.00. I would give Walter a pg-13 rating, so he isn’t a toy for children. But if you like his character on Jeff’s shows, you will enjoy the doll. For a taste of his humor check out this YouTube link. Boyfriend and I went to a live show of Jeff Dunham a couple of years ago, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Jeff has crafted each of his special friends himself, and his ventriloquist act is hilarious! Whether it’s Walter the retired wannabe Walmart greeter to Achmed the Dead Terrorist, or Peanut, one of the funniest and strangest looking creatures I have ever seen, every one of his creations cracked us up! The Walter doll I am giving away has several smarty pants sayings for your listening pleasure. :)
Remember, pg-13!

Supplies!

Check out Hobby Lobby’s Website here. My local store donated over $40 worth of supplies for you to have fun using and creating beautiful memories!!

I am sharing another post from Rebecca Dunning of Life Musings and Justice concerning Charles Manly, the son of Jennifer Manly. Please read this post and pray for the needs of this family. Consider using one of the included links to help fund the needs for Charles. My heart goes out to this family, I”m sure yours will as well.

Begin post from Rebecca Dunning: I’m honored to have guest blogger and friend, Jennifer Manly, share a bit about her quest to save her son, Charles. Please feel free to repost and share in any way you may want to! ~Rebecca

Hope, grace, love, restoration….So many things go into these powerful words. I am truly honored to be able to share my story of restoration and hope with you- Jennifer Manly

I am Jen, former Army brat, and eldest of three and now a 31 year old mother of five, living here in our beautiful Colorado. I’ve always been a free spirit with a zest for life which evolved into being a “wild child” in my early preteen years. After some very traumatic circumstances, I fell into a deep depression which landed me in “the system.” I was in and out of group homes, hospitals, and “therapeutic” foster homes. Shortly after returning home at 15 I ran away which lead me down a true path of destruction. I found myself hitch-hiking around Texas and Mexico with a man ten years older than me who was an alcoholic with a horrible addiction to crack. I found myself broken, alone, homeless, and pregnant at seventeen.

Might I say, it was not my best year…

Twenty weeks into my pregnancy reality sunk-in; I was going to be a mother. I called my parents for help and moved to Leavenworth, Kansas. Despite all my greatest efforts to pull a life together for my son: getting my GED, working two jobs, and attending college, his father was still in my life.

To the devastation of my son, I allowed his father to watch him while I was in school and working. It was not until I came home to an empty house and had to retrieve my five month old son from a local crack house (mind you, I did not have a car and walked around for hours trying to find my child in the dark) that I realized again something had to change.

I joined the Air Force when my son, Joshua was 9 months old and he went to live with my parents until we were reunited in Great Falls, Montana when he was 18 months old. Life was a continual up-hill battle. My son had a difficult time adapting and I stumbled often. Only the healing power of Christ could restore my broken life.

Now, I am on a new journey. My son, now Charles Joshua, after being adopted by my husband, has been diagnosed with Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) and sever ADHD. After years of therapy, nutrition changes… you name it, he was recommended by multiple psychologists and psychiatrist to be placed in a residential hospital for the safety of our family. Having been a child of the system I know this is not the answer. Countless hours of prayer and many tears later, God has opened a door for healing through a ministry that loves and speaks life into teens like, Charles. Shepherd’s Hill Academy is our answer to prayer. The hurdle is the tuition that is over $50,000 annually.

Again, after more prayer, I felt God speak to my heart saying, “This is nothing in comparison to how big I am. I love your son and desire his heart even more then you.”

Hard to even imagine!…

We took a leap of faith and began selling things and cashed in our small 401K. Then we prayed more. God has been moving in the hearts of others in mighty ways. We now have raised over $12,000!! We have had several yard sales that have brought in a $1,000 at a time, and a Range Rover was donated to our family (which is presently for sale). Chic-Fil-A even allowed us to host a fund raiser. Miracles have begun to happen!! Through, hearts like yours God has continually showed His out-stretched arms. He has shown us His hope, His grace, His love, and His desire for restoration in my sweet boy.

~Jennifer Manly
Here are a few things we are doing to support the Manly family. Our goal is total restoration … and nothing else.

Grateful Mondays…6/20/2011

20 Jun
Gardenia!

This is my weekly installment of things I am grateful for, following the idea from Ann Voskamp.  You can check out my Things I’m Grateful For page as well. So, this week I am grateful for:

1. Flowers blooming in my yard: Gardenias! The smell is wonderful, and greets me as I go to work everyday.

2. Business and Life Coaching. I have been working with Alan Melton, and he is helping me think outside of the box again. The questionnaire I mentioned before that I was working on came from him, and it has really helped me refocus not just on my business but on my life as a whole. It has been a great experience working with him.

3. Making a new plan for my life. I’m grateful for dreams. One of the things I am being encouraged to do is come up with 101 goals for my life. I will share my list when it’s finished. Do you have a list like that?

4. Figuring out what I like about myself. It hasn’t been part of the working plan with the coaching, but looking at other things for the plan has also helped me appreciate some things about myself. I can be very self critical and only talk to myself about things I don’t like. While self awareness and reflection can often help us change, being severely critical of our failures doesn’t. So it’s refreshing to realize I do like myself, and that there are some things I really do well.

5. For reminders that God loves me, and is always with me. He is always a friend in my corner. So much more than this is available to us in our relationship with Him. Take the time to read this post about taking scraps of lies and making a quilt of truth.

6. I am grateful for the gifts and abilities in others, so I don’t have to figure out everything by myself all the time. :) Others around me have gifts and talents that are a regular blessing to me.

7. Collages! My friend and I (Nicole from Raspberry Moon) each made a collage this weekend and had a ball! They are mixed media collages and we had never made anything like it. Wayna Stephenson Guirl  led the class. She is so talented and sweet, we had a wonderful time pulling things out of her stash and ours to make our creations. Have you ever made something like this? I would love to see it, send me a link!

8. Clean, fresh sheets! I LOVE the smell of linens freshly laundered. I can’t wait to get them on the bed!

9. For time to read the blogs of others. I will be sharing a new list of lovely places to visit soon! In the meantime, you catch up on the last post I wrote for this.

10. Time with my Dad. We cooked dinner for him and celebrated Father’s Day with him. I have a great  daddy.

Hope you have a wonderful week! Life is good! Talk to you soon, Angela

Love Is…

17 Jun

…something that needs to be cultivated, just like a field of crops or flowers you plant in your yard. If you don’t pursue the weeds and remove them, they will overtake your lovely flower bed. The same goes for helping love have a place to bloom inside of us. When we have unloving thoughts towards others, those are the weeds. Those thoughts won’t just leave by themselves. You have to pull them out and say “No!” to them and replace them with a loving thought towards the one the weed was growing against. Sometimes these word weeds are growing against our family or friends, sometimes they are growing against ourselves. Either way, you have to do something to make those weeds stop growing, just like you have to physically pull weeds out of that flowerbed. I want to encourage you to make a conscious effort to weed your heart and mind and replace all that with loving thoughts and actions. You’ll see a much more beautiful harvest of flowers in your life if you will.

Love is patient.

Love is kind.

Love does not envy.

Love does not boast.

Love is not proud.

Love does not dishonor others.

Love is not self-seeking.

Love is not easily angered.

Love keeps no record of wrongs.

Love does not delight in the pain of others but rejoices with the truth.

Love always protects.

Love always trusts.

Love always hopes.

Love always perseveres.

Love never fails. 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8

Hope you have a love filled day!  Angela

The View From Sydney

15 Jun

The world was treated to a rare display of full lunar eclipse on Tuesday night. The eclipse lasted for over 100 minutes in parts of Asia, Europe and Africa, making it the longest since 2000 and one of the longest on record, according to NASA. The picture I’m sharing is of the blood red moon people in Sydney, Australia were able to see during the event. We will have to wait a few years to see another full eclipse over the US. It will be visible mostly from New Jersey in April 2014. So maybe we need to plan a trip up north to get a good view. :)

Granddaughter and I found a pretty good YouTube video of the event too. There may be more available by the time you read this blog, but we could only find a few. We liked this one.

I have always been fascinated with events like this. When I was growing up, my dad would let us climb up on the roof with him and lay down on a blanket to watch the stars. We watched an eclipse this way once, as well as falling stars 2 or 3 times a year. If we found out some other celestial event was going to occur, we would get that blanket out and get ready for our adventure on the roof! It was a lot of fun.

Do you enjoy these types of things? Did you have special rituals you and your family did to watch them? My parents always had a wonderful sense of adventure. We enjoyed lots of wonderful trips they planned out and did all sorts of things growing up. I’m glad enjoying the stars and lunar events was a part of that.

Well, I guess I’ll go start planning my trip to New Jersey. :) Maybe my dad will go with me and we can find a roof to watch it on. G’nite! Angela

Grateful Mondays….6/13/2011

13 Jun

I have more of my gratitude list to share today. :) It’s a good day to do it too, one of those busy, crazy, I can’t wait to be home days. I am looking forward to these posts now myself…..

1. Libraries: I love books! I love to see them all stacked up nicely on the shelf, I love to see them laying on a table, I love to see them sitting in a chair. Kinda sounds like Dr. Seuss :) . But love some books, I do, I do! I am thankful for libraries full that are free for the borrowing….until I forget I have them and have to pay the occasional fine. :) How about you, do you love books too?

2. I am grateful for far away friends who take the time to send small messages, even a small text to let me know they are thinking of me today. With this friend that means someone was praying for me today, and that thought makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Why don’t we both say a prayer for a friend and let them know we are thinking of them? It just might give them the warm fuzzies too……

3. I am grateful for my home, my refuge, the place I can run to when the day is over and just be me and be loved. God has blessed us with a nice home too. I grateful for that as well.

4. I am grateful for lists that get done, with each thing finished, marked off and celebrated! Remember those shelves we bought at Ikea? We were working on shelf assembly and unpacking at Boyfriend’s home this weekend, and it felt good to look back over what we accomplished at the end of the weekend. One step closer to being unpacked. Bless his heart, he’s only lived there 2 years.

5. I am grateful for games and the fun we have while playing them. We are playing Little Big Planet 2 and let me tell you we come up with some funny characters when we do. This little guy was Boyfriend’s sackboy creation. Doncha just love the cupcake hat? We won that on the last level we played. :) I laugh so hard every time we play. I am really grateful for fun and laughter! Aren’t you?

6. I am always grateful for nature and what I am surprised by day to day. I love to spot hawks and butterflies, they always just make me smile. I have a small swarm of butterfly magnets and ornaments I am accidentally collecting. I didn’t start out thinking, I want to collect butterflies! But after realizing I own about 20 different kinds as well as 7 or 8 pairs of butterfly earrings, I think that qualifies as collecting. I do love to see them outside flying around. Having them hanging in my room just reminds me of that feeling I guess.

7. I love the fact that I am older now. I am very thankful for that. I am more settled and content than I have ever been. I still have moments that flap me occasionally, but usually they are few and far between, if menopause isn’t raging through me. :) I can take a deep breath and just realize that this too will pass, and I have survived a lot worse, whatever it is that is bothering me. That really is a comforting feeling. Maybe that’s one of the things that makes enjoying myself feel so good now.

That seems to be it for today. The idea for this list came from Ann Voskamp. Please feel free to click on the button at the bottom of the page to see more grateful people and maybe join with us. We would love to have you! Let me know what wonderful things you are grateful for this week, I’m sure it will be a great list! Angela

6. Cinemagraphs – cool still photography with a moving element in it. Read an article about it here and check out the art at: From Me To You. I just found this stuff today and it kinda made my jaw drop…..I am so not a digitally savvy person. I can’t imagine how you would do this, but I really enjoyed the efforts of others. I am very much in awe of this technique right now. Lots of fun watching for the movement I think. Once you get your jaw back into place, go here:

7. Craft Buds – Upcycle: Shirt To Purse – This is for all my recycle/reuse/repurpose friends and I really loved this one! I have a couple of old shirts that should work really well for this. Another one that if you get to make it I wanna see pictures :) . There are lots of other tutorials as well. Then, get out your heavy equipment for:

8. A craft for my more industrial minded friends: Kara at Happy Go Lucky shares great instructions for a framed wired jewelry holder she made from odds and ends from home. When finished she added hooks to the sides and bottom to give her even more storage. It all comes together beautifully! When you get that finished you really ought to check out:

9. Obsessively Stitching -  Looks like fun sewing ideas from, you guessed it, an obsessive stitcher. :) She even has tutorials to make Angry Birds! Yep! Stuffed counterparts to the game. Now you can just make your own pig and birds and let them go at it! All I need now are instructions for the slingshot…..When I finish tearing down the pig’s house I think I’ll drop by:

10.  Dawn’s Cottage Corner. Dawn was inspired to make her own mini album after following the instructions she found in the YouTube tutorial below. Her album is fantastic, and so is this tutorial. It’s from My Scrap World Channel on YouTube. Have fun with both!

Whew! Ok, I’m done for now! That was a lot of work…..or will be whenever I get around to it all huh? Let me know if you enjoy these or are inspired to have a go at any of them yourselves. Until then, I think I’ll go find me a nice warm tub to relax in, ok? Talk to you soon, Angela
