May I Introduce….

24 Dec

I have been too busy to write trying to get ready for Christmas. I had lots of posts planned that did not materialize simply because I bit off more than I could chew with a gift request from my granddaughters this year. I have a small tale to tell, so let me start at the beginning…

It’s all her fault really.

This is the Raggedy Ann my mom made for me way back when….this is the doll that started it all. She is worn from her forty-ish years of existence, and I still love her dearly. The girls love to talk to her and pet her, but I don’t let them play with her a lot because she is just a tad fragile. So I asked the oldest grand a few months ago if she would like for me to make her one for Christmas, and she said yes. Le sigh. I should have started sewing then.

Some time in November I pulled out all the old Raggedy stuff I had, and started going through it.

At the time, I thought I had hit the jackpot. My mom and I use to make these dolls and sell them, but that was over 25 years ago. But when I saw all this stuff, I thought I was in like Flynn and started sorting to see what I had. I had a couple of treasures I didn’t even realize.

I had not one, but 2 FACES my mom finished before she got too sick to sew. (Mom passed away a long time ago, go here for a little more about her :) ) She had come up with a technique for making the Raggedy faces with crayons and waxed paper to save money and not have to buy a bunch of transfers or have to embroider the faces. She nor I liked to embroider much. I was thrilled to find this face smiling back at me from the stash. Now, it was time to begin!

Help! I can’t feel my legs!

I got this far on the first doll, and was having some major problems with my sewing machine, so I decided to take a short break. I was finally able to get her legs attached. This version of Raggedy is as tall as the 2 year old – 35 inches….

That’s Better!

At this stage a friend of mine called the doll Alien Annie, :) . I did get a kick out of that. I really did have a tough time making these dolls though. Part of the patterns were there, parts were missing. I had to trace the doll my mom had started to make a body pattern for the other dolls I wanted to make. I also had to figure out the way to make the transfers for the other face (I did find 2 faces, just not 2 whole dolls cut out). It took a little trial and error, and way more time than I thought it would, but I finally got a doll to this point:

Alien Annie now had a reverse mohawk. The sewing of the hair had a couple of tense moments as well, because some of those directions were missing too. A little trial and error goes a long way in creating, doesn’t it?

Next, we have this interesting shot:

No, this isn’t Animal from the Muppets.

Even though it does remind me of him. :) I was finally able to complete one whole doll. May I introduce….

…Raggedy Ann!

Then here we are on Christmas Eve and I am still trying to finish 2 MORE DOLLS! I think I have gone Raggedy insane! But I am close, and I will keep sewing hair until they all look like Animal, er, Raggedy Ann! I hope you enjoyed my tale of sew and sew. :)

I will be sharing some of my cookie recipes in the next few posts. I hope to make a few by tomorrow anyway: chocolate chip, peanut butter, sugar cookies, no bake chocolate-peanut butter-oatmeal cookies and chocolate krispie treats. I will let you know what the grands think of my cookie creations as well as their dolls.

Merry Christmas to you all, and to all a Good Night! Angela

Why Yes Virginia, There Is A Spirit of Christmas….

This is one of the sweetest posts I’ve read in a while. I saw this on Yahoo News, it is originally from The Associated Press. Merry Christmas!

Anonymous donors pay off Kmart layaway accounts

APBy MARGERY A. BECK | AP – Fri, Dec 16, 2011

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The young father stood in line at the Kmart layaway counter, wearing dirty clothes and worn-out boots. With him were three small children.

He asked to pay something on his bill because he knew he wouldn’t be able to afford it all before Christmas. Then a mysterious woman stepped up to the counter.

“She told him, ‘No, I’m paying for it,’” recalled Edna Deppe, assistant manager at the store in Indianapolis. “He just stood there and looked at her and then looked at me and asked if it was a joke. I told him it wasn’t, and that she was going to pay for him. And he just busted out in tears.”

At Kmart stores across the country, Santa seems to be getting some help: Anonymous donors are paying off strangers’ layaway accounts, buying the Christmas gifts other families couldn’t afford, especially toys and children’s clothes set aside by impoverished parents.

Before she left the store Tuesday evening, the Indianapolis woman in her mid-40s had paid the layaway orders for as many as 50 people. On the way out, she handed out $50 bills and paid for two carts of toys for a woman in line at the cash register.

“She was doing it in the memory of her husband who had just died, and she said she wasn’t going to be able to spend it and wanted to make people happy with it,” Deppe said. The woman did not identify herself and only asked people to “remember Ben,” an apparent reference to her husband.

Deppe, who said she’s worked in retail for 40 years, had never seen anything like it.

“It was like an angel fell out of the sky and appeared in our store,” she said.

Most of the donors have done their giving secretly.

Dona Bremser, an Omaha nurse, was at work when a Kmart employee called to tell her that someone had paid off the $70 balance of her layaway account, which held nearly $200 in toys for her 4-year-old son.

“I was speechless,” Bremser said. “It made me believe in Christmas again.”

Dozens of other customers have received similar calls in Nebraska, Michigan, Iowa, Indiana and Montana.

The benefactors generally ask to help families who are squirreling away items for young children. They often pay a portion of the balance, usually all but a few dollars or cents so the layaway order stays in the store’s system.

The phenomenon seems to have begun in Michigan before spreading, Kmart executives said.

“It is honestly being driven by people wanting to do a good deed at this time of the year,” said Salima Yala, Kmart’s division vice president for layaway.

The good Samaritans seem to be visiting mainly Kmart stores, though a Wal-Mart spokesman said a few of his stores in Joplin, Mo., and Chicago have also seen some layaway accounts paid off.

Kmart representatives say they did nothing to instigate the secret Santas or spread word of the generosity. But it’s happening as the company struggles to compete with chains such as Wal-Mart and Target.

Kmart may be the focus of layaway generosity, Yala said, because it is one of the few large discount stores that has offered layaway year-round for about four decades. Under the program, customers can make purchases but let the store hold onto their merchandise as they pay it off slowly over several weeks.

The sad memories of layaways lost prompted at least one good Samaritan to pay off the accounts of five people at an Omaha Kmart, said Karl Graff, the store’s assistant manager.

“She told me that when she was younger, her mom used to set up things on layaway at Kmart, but they rarely were able to pay them off because they just didn’t have the money for it,” Graff said.

He called a woman who had been helped, “and she broke down in tears on the phone with me. She wasn’t sure she was going to be able to pay off their layaway and was afraid their kids weren’t going to have anything for Christmas.”

“You know, 50 bucks may not sound like a lot, but I tell you what, at the right time, it may as well be a million dollars for some people,” Graff said.

Graff’s store alone has seen about a dozen layaway accounts paid off in the last 10 days, with the donors paying $50 to $250 on each account.

“To be honest, in retail, it’s easy to get cynical about the holidays, because you’re kind of grinding it out when everybody else is having family time,” Graff said. “It’s really encouraging to see this side of Christmas again.”

Lori Stearnes of Omaha also benefited from the generosity of a stranger who paid all but $58 of her $250 layaway bill for toys for her four youngest grandchildren.

Stearnes said she and her husband live paycheck to paycheck, but she plans to use the money she was saving for the toys to help pay for someone else’s layaway.

In Missoula, Mont., a man spent more than $1,200 to pay down the balances of six customers whose layaway orders were about to be returned to a Kmart store’s inventory because of late payments.

Store employees reached one beneficiary on her cellphone at Seattle Children’s Hospital, where her son was being treated for an undisclosed illness.

“She was yelling at the nurses, ‘We’re going to have Christmas after all!’” store manager Josine Murrin said.

A Kmart in Plainfield Township, Mich., called Roberta Carter last week to let her know a man had paid all but 40 cents of her $60 layaway.

Carter, a mother of eight from Grand Rapids, Mich., said she cried upon hearing the news. She and her family have been struggling as she seeks a full-time job.

“My kids will have clothes for Christmas,” she said.

Angie Torres, a stay-at-home mother of four children under the age of 8, was in the Indianapolis Kmart on Tuesday to make a payment on her layaway bill when she learned the woman next to her was paying off her account.

“I started to cry. I couldn’t believe it,” said Torres, who doubted she would have been able to pay off the balance. “I was in disbelief. I hugged her and gave her a kiss.”

Steampunk Christmas at Macy’s

13 Dec

Two of my friends headed up to the Big Apple over the weekend, and spied Macy’s Steampunk Christmas window display. It sounded so freakin’ awesome I had to find something on it. This YouTube by Hey Mishka was great! Click on her name and check out lots more pics of the windows. For some reason the display reminds me of the game Little Big Planet. Hope you enjoy the show! ;)

Affirmations and Declarations

11 Dec

Words are powerful. We throw them around really casually sometimes, but what could happen if we start speaking positive words, on purpose? I wanted to share a few verses, declarations and affirmations and to encourage you to use them. Look through the list and choose the ones that jump out at you, and speak them to yourself during your day. When I am consistent in using affirming words regularly, I see a difference in my life. My hope is you will find some encouragement and hope here today as well.

I  declare God’s incredible blessings over my life. I’m going to see an explosion of God’s goodness this year. I’m going to experience the surpassing greatness of God’s favor. It’s going to elevate me to a level higher than I ever dreamed.

I trust my hopes and dreams to God. – Psalm 119:116

I am perfectly healthy in body, mind and spirit.

I forgive and I am forgiven.

I am precious to God. -Matthew 6:25-44

I am healthy, happy and radiant.

I declare I am special and extraordinary. I have been custom made. I am one of a kind. Of all the things God created, what He is the most proud of is not that spectacular solar system, not the magnificent sunsets, not even the amazing animals. The creation that God calls His masterpiece is me.

I easily forgive all those that need forgiving and I forgive myself.

I love and accept myself.

I know that God is always with me. – Isaiah 41:10

I know that today’s discouragement will be replaced by tomorrow’s joy. – Isaiah 51:11

I express love to all those I meet.

The more resentment I release the more love I have to express,

I release the need to be right all the time and to judge others.

I know that God will give me the desires of my heart. – Psalm 37:4

I am free, I am well, I am whole, and I am strong and healthy.

I release the need to please others.

I know that God will fill my life with good things. – Psalm 103:1-5

I know that God’s unfailing love surrounds me and that I can trust Him. – Psalm 23:10

I am a radiating center of divine love.

I am healthy, and full of energy and vitality.

Forgiveness is a gift I now give to myself and those around me.

My sleep is relaxed and refreshing.

My body is healed, restored and filled with energy.

The past has no power over me.

I attract loving, beautiful people into my life.

I release old hurt, anger and resentment easily.

Instead of complaining about the economy, I’m going to believe for the best year ever. I declare Psalm 37:19 over my life, which says that even in famine the righteous will have more than enough, I’m going to believe God to bring increase in the middle of what looks like a bad situation. I will believe for more than enough so I can share with others.

I hope you find words to encourage you here today. Write them on sticky notes and put them on your mirror, your dash, maybe your desk, and think about them, meditate on them for a minute or for several minutes when you see them. We can use words to build up our lives. Speak life, hope, love and encouragement to yourself. You are special. You are worth it. Talk to you soon, Angela

Share A Collage With Free Art in NYC

10 Dec

I got an idea from texterial, a lovely blog I’ve been lucky enough to find. She shared some information on an article on ClothPaperScissors blog, and I want to help spread the news! If you are the artsy craftsy type and would like to participate in a sidewalk giveaway of art, read on! Collages are not very complicated, mostly just layering of materials with texture, gel or glue and maybe a little paint. I have made a few, if I can do it anyone can. You also get to put your contact info on any piece you send in, the piece size should be 6 x 6 inches, so you don’t even have to spend a long time on it. This sounds fun to me. If I can squeeze it in with the 267 other things I am trying to do, I’ll show you what I create to send. :) Pop over to texterial to see what she is creating as well. Read on for all the info:

Free Art in NYC—Be a part of it!

7 Dec 2011 by Jenn Mason

Free-Art-smallDo you remember the article on Guerrilla Art by Fred Free (July/August 2010)? Well, I’m lucky enough to regularly run into Fred about town and every time I see him I think—I need to be more guerrilla-like.

But it’s more fun to be guerrilla-like in a group. (interesting fact: a group of gorillas is a “Band.” I think a group of guerrilla artists should be called a “Creative”.)

So, listen up all you collage artists. Now is your chance to be part of something bigger. We’re having a guerrilla freeART show in NYC! and we need your art! (this is our new “logo” by Free Free himself!)

Sometime, between Dec. 23 and Dec 27, 2011, we will be hosting a sidewalk freeART show. Anybody passing by will get a piece of freeART! We’re looking for collage artists to send us 6″ x 6″ collages with their preferred contact information written on the back (optional) to show in our freeART sidewalk show.

Here are the specifics:

  • You may send in more than 1 collage (the more the merrier)
  • Pieces must be 6″ x 6″ and under 1/4″ thick (and lightweight!)
  • You will not be getting your art back. (Instead you will be helping to spread the art!)
  • Video from the freeART show will be featured in our upcoming Collage in Color vol. 2 eMag!
  • If you put your name on the back of the piece, you will be listed as a contributor in the eMag article.
  • Art needs to arrive at our office by December 19 in order to be recorded and packed for the show.
  • All art will be given away! No art will be refused!
  • There is no fee to enter this project! (Save your money for giftwrap! or new studio toys!)
  • Art Karma is a good thing.
  • Mail all collages to:
    • Interweave/Cloth Paper Scissors
    • freeART
    • 490 Boston Post Rd, Suite 15
    • Sudbury, MA 01776

Planning on being in NYC at this time? Come get a free piece of art and help us host the show! But first you’ll have to find us…follow our activities on Facebook.com/clothpaperscissorsmag for the latest information or find us on twitter: @CPSmagazine #freeART

The freeART show will be planned semi-spontaneously around the weather conditions and busy times of day.

Come be part of our Creative band of Guerrilla artists. Make art, send art, give art away!

Also, those of you with blogs…Spread the word! the more art we get, the more art we can give away!

Now, go and make freeART!

Fun Fact Friday 12/9/2011 Star Wars Edition

09 Dec

It’s Friday! Time to check out some odd-ball news, quotes I like, a few strange facts and some things that might make you pause and go “hmmmmm.” It’s been an interesting life in a few places. Check this out:

Darth Vader claims land plot in Ukraine -IEV (Reuters) – Welcoming the local authorities’ move to the dark side, Darth Vader has asked for a land plot in the Ukrainian Black Sea port of Odessa to park his space ship. An Odessite dressed as the Star Wars villain visited the mayor’s office to claim a free land plot. His visit followed a decision by city authorities to grant attractive land plots along the sea coast to a group of people for free, prompting public concerns about corruption, according to local media. The mayor’s office has since said the move was a mistake but has not yet canceled it, according to local news website Dumskaya.net.

“I am Darth Vader, the right hand of Emperor Palpatine,” the man introduced himself to amused policemen, as seen in a video posted on YouTube and accompanied by the Imperial March music. “…Knowing that many (local legislature) deputies and the mayor have switched to the dark side… I have come for a land plot… for my space cruiser.” Officials accepted the man’s application after he showed his passport and removed the black helmet equipped with a voice-distorting device.

“The application has been registered and will be considered,” a spokeswoman for the mayor’s office told Reuters. “We are not on the dark side, we are light-side people,” she added.  Reporting by Olzhas Auyezov; Additional reporting by Pavel Polityuk, editing by Paul Casciato

Fact Finders

The name of the Wikkipedia site for Star Wars: Wookieepedia. It is written in English, not Wookie. :)

Lucas got the idea for Chewbacca one morning in the early ’70s while watching his wife, Marcia, drive off in her car. She had their Alaskan malamute, Indiana, (the name sake for Indiana Jones) with her. Lucas liked the way the large shaggy dog looked in the passenger seat so he decided to create a character in the film that was a cross between Indiana, a bear, and a monkey.

Lucas intended that C-3PO and R2-D2 be a space-age Laurel and Hardy team. I think he succeeded with that one.

The voice of Yoda was done by the same actor that does the voice for Miss Piggy.

Anthony Daniel is the only actor to appear in all 6 Star Wars Films. Who did he play?

Quotables

“Do or do not….there is no try.” Yoda

Hans Solo – “Wonderful girl. Either I’m going to kill her or I’m beginning to like her.”

C-3PO – “That malfunctioning little twirp, this is all his fault.”

“I didn’t want to go (to the audition) because (my agent) said it’s the part of a robot, so I said you’re mad! I don’t play robots!”~ Anthony Daniels

“Aaaaaaargh!” – Chewbacca

Funnies

To keep from being disturbed while shooting Return of the Jedi, Lucas pretended he was making a horror movie called Blue Harvest, and even made caps and shirts for the crew to wear during filming.

Due to the limited budget the American cast members and crew (including George Lucas) all decided to fly coach class to England, rather than first class. When Carrie Fisher’s mother Debbie Reynolds heard about this she called George Lucas, complaining about how insulting it was for her daughter to be flying coach. Carrie Fisher was in the room with George Lucas when he took the call, and after a few minutes asked if she could talk to her mother. When George Lucas handed her the phone she simply said, “Mother, I want to fly coach, will you fuck off?!” and hung up. [IMDB]

According to Mark Hamill, studios executives were unhappy that Chewbacca has no clothes and attempted to have the costume redesigned with shorts.

One of the asteroids in the movie was a shoe, another was a potato. The rumor is that Lucas asked for the asteroid scene to be redone so many times that someone got annoyed and threw in their shoe. The potato was just a potato.

Mr. Potato Head, aka Darth Tater, was born on Potatooine. His parents discovered his force sensibility when he let his toys float in the air.

Watch Out, It’s The End of The World As We Know It….

08 Dec

…but I feel fine. :) I’ve started cooking. I have several recipes that I have been using, and I want to share them with you. I don’t cook much, but what I’m sharing will be tasty. Just don’t expect me to sound like anything except a cooking novice. This recipe is for some yummy burgers I like to call: Angela’s Taco Turkey Burgers. If you think turkey burgers are too bland, I agree. I have spiced mine up. I simply use taco seasoning mixes. Here are my directions:

Accidentally Angela's Taco Turkey Burgers - Yum!

Ingredients:

21 oz package turkey, I use the leanest they have
1 package taco seasoning, I look for packages without MSG as this can give me horrific headaches
1/2 cup finely chopped onion (optional)
3 Tablespoons olive oil

Place turkey in a large bowl. I like to squish it up some, then add the taco seasoning and squish some more. If I use the onion, this is when I add it as well, but I haven’t used any the last couple of times because I liked the seasoning alone so well.

Once everything is mixed well together, pour your olive oil into a skillet or frying pan and start heating it. I like for the oil to be hot when I add the burgers. When you cook with lean turkey meat, you have to add some kind of oil to help cook it. Sorry I don’t sound all technical with this, as discussed earlier I’m not really a cook. :) I start the pan on medium high, and keep an eye on it during this next step. While the oil is heating, divide your turkey into 6 or so burgers. I did 4 really fat burgers one time, and 6 not so fat ones another time. The fatter the patty the longer it will need to cook.

Fry Baby Fry!

Once the oil is hot, I lay my patties in it and turn it down to medium heat, then usually cover the pan and let the burgers sit in the heat and cook for about 10 minutes or so. Then, raise the lid carefully and turn those puppies over! I may turn them over again to be sure they are done all the way through.

Start to finish this takes around 30 minutes. I cut up the lettuce, tomato and onion while the burgers were cooking, and opened a can of chili with beans and warmed that up. When the burgers were done, we threw some cheese on them and had some dinner! They were great. Had 2 leftover patties and used those for lunch the next day. I think they tasted even better. Boyfriend was very happy with my Taco Burgers.

I invite you to give this simple recipe a try, and let me know what you think! Thanks for hanging out with me today, all this talk about food is making me hungry. Need to go find a snack! Later, Angela

Just For Fun: Johnny Depp

07 Dec

I am a little low on blog fodder today, so I decided to find a fun little YouTube for us. It’s full of the many faces of Mr. John Christopher Depp II. Or Capn Jack Sparrow, you have heard of him eh? :) Enjoy!
